Chapter One Hundred and Two: Do You Really Take Me for a Sickly Cat?
A thought flashed through Louise’s mind: should she tell the director to cut the live broadcast immediately?
As a wilderness exploration program, Exploring the Wild had an excellent reputation with viewers, drawing well over a million people each episode.
Their Blue Star Pulse series, in particular, had caused a tremendous sensation around the world.
Though today’s was only a special live broadcast, there were still well over a hundred thousand people watching online. If this fake footage spread, it would deal a devastating blow to the show’s reputation and leave a stain on her career as a host.
Just as Louise had expected, many viewers, after seeing the video, rushed into the stream to leave comments. They called Kran a fraud and insisted that there could never be such a crocodile on Blue Star.
“I know many of you still don’t believe it, and think that the video we just saw was animated. That’s fine... because very soon we’ll be seeing that extraordinary fellow in person. I can swear now, in the name of God, that if I’m deceiving you, I’ll jump straight out of the helicopter myself...”
As he spoke, Kran raised his palm outward in an oath-like gesture.
Seeing that, the beautiful host could not help but feel a trace of doubt in her eyes.
She did not understand why Kran was so certain.
This was a live broadcast, and they had already entered the depths of the primeval jungle. Any lie would be exposed very quickly.
Kran waved at the camera, then took out a satellite phone and made a call.
After a brief conversation, he smiled again and said, “Miss Louise, everyone is lucky today. I’ve just received the latest news: that prehistoric giant crocodile did not flee. It is still dwelling within its territory.
In another ten minutes, we’ll see it. Believe me, its appearance will absolutely astonish everyone watching this broadcast, and it will drive many Blue Star media outlets crazy. This will be a miracle in biology!”
“Is that so? Then we look forward to it very much,” Louise replied mechanically.
Though the man before her was full of confidence, she still refused to believe that such a crocodile truly existed.
The hundred-thousand-odd viewers in the live room felt the same. They were already eager to see this clown fulfill his promise to jump from the helicopter.
At last, was it coming?
Hearing the roar from afar, Lu Chen knew the humans hiding behind the scenes were about to appear.
Soon, several helicopters emerged in the sky.
He had originally thought they would attack from within the jungle, but now things had become a little troublesome.
After a moment’s thought, Lu Chen turned and lashed his tail, then raced toward a great river not far away.
Several drones that had been filming around him immediately followed. Lu Chen had intentionally left those drones alone. Since he had already been filmed, destroying them now would be meaningless and would only expose his abilities in advance.
The river before him was slightly narrower than the one where Lu Chen had once dug himself a cave to live in, but near the mouth it was still several hundred meters wide, and its deepest point reached more than twenty meters. After his massive body entered the water, it vanished quickly.
Not long after Lu Chen disappeared, Kran received a report from his men.
With some fury, he barked, “How could it suddenly disappear? What... it hid in the river! Even if it hides in the ocean today, we will still catch it.”
Seeing that Kran’s expression had changed, Louise quickly asked, “Mr. Kran, has something unexpected happened?”
“Those idiots flew the drones too close when they were monitoring it just now. They startled the prehistoric crocodile, and it fled into the river. But that’s fine. We anticipated this already. In a moment, we’ll definitely let everyone see its shadow.”
Very quickly, five helicopters flew over the river.
On the live feed, the rainforest rolled in layered mountains, ancient and primeval, steeped in a mysterious, archaic beauty.
A winding river cut through it, stretching all the way to the sea more than ten miles away.
Inside the helicopters, two armed men opened the hatch and threw out a cylindrical orange device.
Once it hit the water, its rear propulsor activated, and it vanished swiftly like a submarine.
Soon, the armed personnel operating the underwater detection equipment saw a colossal figure appear on the screen. After confirming it was their target, they hurriedly reported back to Kran.
“Excellent. Release the new underwater high-explosive grenades at once. Mind the distance, and try to drive this thing ashore for capture...” After issuing the order, Kran once again spoke with complete confidence. “Miss Louise, and everyone watching the live stream, you are about to see the prehistoric giant crocodile. Prepare yourselves for this biological miracle!”
Boom, boom, boom!
Explosions rang out one after another, and the calm river surface was whipped into waves more than ten meters high.
The moment the high-explosive grenades were dropped, Lu Chen sensed the danger. He did not hesitate for a moment and immediately swam away at top speed.
He had only gone a little over ten meters when the tremendous shockwave from behind had already surged up, sending him several yards forward.
Fortunately, Lu Chen was now thick-skinned and tough; the blast did him no harm at all.
The fish swimming nearby, however, were not so lucky. White masses floated across the surface, and many were blown into minced flesh. In an instant, the river stank strongly of blood.
Everyone in the helicopters, along with the viewers watching the stream, were long accustomed to such scenes. Any comments from the occasional animal rights activist were quickly deleted.
Under the relentless barrage of bombs and encirclement, Lu Chen had no choice but to change direction and swim toward the shallow water near the bank. Soon, his dark, enormous body became faintly visible in the water.
Kran, excited, pointed down at the water and shouted, “Look! The prehistoric giant crocodile has appeared! Keep firing, and make sure to drive it onto the shore!!”
The hundred-thousand-odd viewers in the live room also saw a black shape emerge, only to vanish again.
Boom, boom, boom!
The explosions did not cease.
Damn it... when a tiger doesn’t show its claws, you really think I’m some sick cat.
Lu Chen fled in a sorry state beneath the water, his beastly eyes fixed on the helicopters circling above the river. Although explosions continued all around him, his keen hearing still allowed him to clearly catch the humans’ conversation inside the helicopters.
Those guys were only trying to force him ashore for now. If he never showed himself, they would probably start dropping high-explosive grenades directly at him.
If this went on, Lu Chen could not guarantee he would come out unscathed.
If that was the case... then he would go ashore and settle this once and for all.
He was not without means of fighting back. In the moment they let their guard down, as long as he seized the chance to fire a compressed energy blast, he could bring down a helicopter.
Still, he hesitated slightly over whether he should reveal all his hidden cards before the public now.
Once he took that step, there would be no turning back.
Since there was no turning back, then he would simply do it.
Within a few seconds, Lu Chen had already made up his mind. His limbs churned the water constantly, and his massive back suddenly broke the surface, surging rapidly toward the shore.
“What is that... is it real?”
Seeing that massive, grotesque body clearly emerge, the beautiful host widened her eyes in shock, utterly forgetting how to react.
