Chapter 136: The Pyramid Complex
Filled with doubt, Lu Chen accelerated his flight, bypassing several small hills over a hundred meters high in succession.
What is this? Seeing the massive mountain that appeared abruptly ahead, he stood stunned for a moment.
The mountain rose thousands of feet, spewing flames and billowing thick smoke!
An active volcano!
The crucial point was that this volcano looked very familiar. After a few seconds of hesitation, Lu Chen recognized it. It was strikingly similar to the volcanic phantom that had appeared off the coast of the Xia Kingdom.
His previous hypothesis was correct: the various eerie phantoms appearing on Blue Star all likely had prototypes within these alien dimensions. Furthermore, as time passed and the spatial rifts continued to expand, these creatures from the alien dimensions would eventually descend upon Blue Star in their entirety.
When that time came, it would likely be a true catastrophe for the human world.
He suspected that it was precisely because they had foreseen these highly probable future events that the Xia Kingdom's emergency response team had proactively proposed a partnership with him.
Although the volcano appeared close, it was still at least several hundred miles away. Lu Chen was in no rush to reach it immediately and instead flew slowly. After covering another few dozen miles, he suddenly felt a raw, unfamiliar energy fluctuation coming from below.
With growing curiosity, Lu Chen lowered his altitude. He immediately saw a stone mountain, over a hundred meters tall, jutting out from the jungle. The abnormal energy was emanating precisely from this mountain.
Could it be... a spiritual stone vein?
Lu Chen felt a surge of joy and descended even further.
Suddenly, more scents reached his nostrils.
Decay.
Blood.
Darkness.
They made him instinctively want to stay away from this place.
Suppressing his discomfort, Lu Chen pushed through the thick jungle and landed slowly on the ground. Only then did he notice something unusual: the ground was covered in large, smooth stones, their surfaces carved with mysterious and complex symbols.
It was impossible to tell how many ages had passed, but many of the grooves still held faint, dark brown traces of blood. Scattered nearby were the bones of various unknown animals. The largest femur was over ten meters long, almost equal to Lu Chen’s own body length.
So, this was some form of blood sacrifice from an alien dimension? Those symbols were likely part of some magical array or altar.
Everything before him led Lu Chen to a conclusion. It seemed that none of these alien dimensions were as simple as he had imagined; a great deal had occurred throughout the vast, forgotten ages of the past. Much like the alien spacecraft in the Mist Dimension that had been cleaved in two by a single sword strike.
Filled with questions, Lu Chen continued to walk slowly toward the center along the lines of symbols.
Vaguely, he felt the energy from before becoming clearer, to the point where his own consciousness felt inexplicably suppressed.
Only when he reached the base of the stone mountain did he realize that this mountain, too, was not a natural formation, but had been stacked layer by layer by artificial means. It was only because it was covered in creeping vines that he had overlooked it earlier.
This is...
Standing close by, Lu Chen suddenly felt that this stone mountain looked somewhat familiar.
Isn't this damn thing a pyramid?
Lu Chen was greatly shocked and quickly ran around the stone mountain. Sure enough, it had three sides. In his past life, many believed that pyramids were not built by humans but by an alien civilization, as the architectural technology of ancient Earth's ancestors could never have produced such magnificent structures. After seeing the various remnants left behind by Zhang Sanfeng in the Mist Dimension, Lu Chen had already felt that Earth was not as simple as he had imagined. Now, his speculation had been confirmed once again.
Perhaps one day in the future, spatial rifts would appear on Earth as well.
After surveying the surroundings completely, Lu Chen finally confirmed that this pyramid had been abandoned for who knows how many years and likely posed no great danger.
Curious, he flew back into the sky to carefully examine the surrounding terrain.
The result left him completely stunned.
There wasn't just one pyramid in this valley; they were rolling and continuous, numbering at least twenty or thirty.
So, his previous guess was wrong—these were likely the tombs of some alien civilization. He wondered what kind of treasures might be inside.
Lu Chen pondered for a moment and finally decided to try his luck.
He opened his mouth and inhaled.
Within a few seconds, a massive, compressed energy bomb over three meters in diameter formed in the air.
Then, he launched it at the pyramid...
Just as the compressed energy bomb was about to touch the pyramid, a powerful and terrifying energy erupted.
The massive energy bomb flickered and vanished.
Lu Chen was startled and immediately turned to flee over a thousand meters away. Only after sensing no further anomalies behind him did he return.
It seemed this pyramid possessed some kind of automated defensive array; once it sensed an external threat, the defense mechanism would trigger immediately.
With lingering doubts, Lu Chen descended to the ground to investigate. This time, he did not dare to attack with a compressed energy bomb; instead, he carefully extended his claws to clear the vines clinging to the surface of the pyramid.
It took a full two hours to finish clearing it. Although the pyramid's shape was very similar to those on Earth, the stone surface was covered in many symbols. Perhaps those on Earth had originally been like this, but over thousands of years, wind, rain, and other factors had caused the symbols to disappear.
Lu Chen examined it carefully from top to bottom but found no entrance. Finally, he decided to be bold once more; after all, there seemed to be no immediate danger.
The next moment, another massive compressed energy bomb formed.
The result was no different from before. As soon as the energy bomb approached the pyramid, it was absorbed by the inexplicable energy fluctuations.
Helpless, Lu Chen turned his attention to the other pyramids.
He checked over a dozen in succession, but all were inscribed with defensive arrays that could easily absorb the explosions from his energy bombs.
Just as Lu Chen was about to give up, he finally noticed something amiss with a smaller, shorter pyramid ahead.
The top of the tower seemed to have been forcibly sheared off, and many large stones were scattered about.
Boom...
Boom, boom...
Lu Chen fired a three-shot burst of compressed energy bombs. Suddenly, a nearly transparent light shield appeared on the tower. Under the continuous barrage of the energy bombs, the light shield shattered with a roar, revealing a wide stone door at the base.
So that was it. These pyramids indeed had entrances, but they were hidden by the arrays—a deceptive technique similar to the "blinders" of his past life, which had prevented him from seeing any anomalies from the outside.
Confirming there were no immediate dangers inside, he moved his limbs and entered.
Unexpectedly, it was not dark inside.
Embedded in the ceiling of the stone roof was a sphere the size of a goose egg, made of an unknown material, which radiated a brilliant glow, illuminating the entire interior of the tower.
Lu Chen looked up and felt as if the sphere were a giant eyeball. Being watched by it gave him an inexplicable feeling of creeping dread.
There were many murals on the surrounding stone walls. In the very center of the tower stood a massive stone sarcophagus, its surface also carved with intricate runes.
It seemed his previous speculation was entirely correct: these pyramids were indeed the tombs of an alien species.
Lu Chen examined the paintings on the stone walls carefully and found that most of them depicted strange creatures with the heads of dogs and the bodies of humans.
