Zhang Wei recognized the man sitting in the passenger seat at a glance. It was Zhang Wenyuan, captain of the criminal investigation team in Baocheng City. Zhang Wei was quite surprised to encounter him here, though running into an acquaintance was certainly a good thing.
“Captain Zhang, I never expected to meet you here,” Zhang Wei said with a smile.
“Ah, Zhang Wei! You’re the real-estate agent who showed us around the properties!” Zhang Wenyuan recognized him as well and exclaimed in surprise.
“Wait, you two already know each other?” Li Yun asked, momentarily stunned as she watched them exchange greetings.
“Oh, Zhang Wei is a friend I made in Baocheng City. I never imagined we would run into each other by chance in the capital.” Zhang Wenyuan gave a brief explanation, making clear how the two had met.
“Then let’s talk after we get out of the car.” Li Yun nodded, her face showing sudden understanding. She turned to Zhang Wei and asked, “Xiao Zhang, where should I park the car?”
“Sis Li, I’ll take you to one of the community’s public parking spaces.” Zhang Wei spoke to Li Yun, then walked ahead of the Audi and guided her into a public parking spot.
Li Yun did not seem to be very skilled at driving. It took her quite a while to park the car properly. When she and Zhang Wenyuan finally got out, Zhang Wei noticed the sweat on her forehead. She was clearly a novice behind the wheel.
Although Zhang Wei was curious about their relationship, it was ultimately their private affair, and he did not feel it appropriate to ask. Still, from their words and mannerisms, he could more or less guess what was going on.
Zhang Wenyuan was the captain of Baocheng City’s criminal investigation team, and his work was undoubtedly very demanding. If he had come all the way to the capital to view houses with someone, then either he was buying a home for himself or he was buying one for someone especially close to him. The relationship between the two was therefore obvious.
Duplex apartments were a relatively unusual type of property. In the entire Elegant Garden residential complex, only Building Ten contained duplex units. The whole building consisted of duplex apartments, including one-bedroom, two-bedroom, and three-bedroom units. The architectural style of the building was highly distinctive.
As Zhang Wei led the two of them toward Building Ten, he chatted with them from time to time and cautiously asked, “Sis Li, weren’t you looking at houses with another agent yesterday? Was there anything you particularly liked?”
“There was one that was fairly good. It was also in this community.” Li Yun glanced at Zhang Wei and replied indifferently.
“If you’ve taken a liking to a particular unit, you can tell me its number. I can help you negotiate the price and try to get it for you as cheaply as possible,” Zhang Wei suggested.
“That won’t do. I signed a property-viewing confirmation agreement. I won’t tell you about any houses another agency showed me, and I won’t tell other agents about the houses you show me.” Li Yun shook her head.
As Li Yun spoke, Zhang Wei had already used his mind-reading ability to probe her thoughts.
The unit that agent had shown me yesterday, 1108 in Building Ten, was pretty good. But I’m not going to tell you. Otherwise, I’ll have no way to explain myself to the other agency.
Now that Zhang Wei knew which property the Tiantian Company had shown Li Yun, he had no reason to dwell on the matter. He turned to Zhang Wenyuan and asked, “Captain Zhang, how is my second aunt’s case coming along?”
“That case is proving rather difficult. The two perpetrators were probably repeat offenders. They acted cleanly and efficiently, leaving behind almost no clues.” At the mention of the case, Zhang Wenyuan drew his brows together.
“By the way, those two criminals probably followed you into the residential complex. Do you have any impression of them?” Once he began discussing the case, Zhang Wenyuan became much more talkative. He stared intently at Zhang Wei.
“The two robbers were wearing helmets in the middle of summer. It would be impossible for me to have no impression of them at all. But they were too far away and covered themselves too thoroughly, so I couldn’t make out any obvious features,” Zhang Wei answered honestly.
“That’s right. Those two were very good at disguising themselves. Whether we checked the surveillance footage or questioned passersby, no one could identify any clear features.” Zhang Wenyuan slapped his forehead, seemingly falling into deep thought about the case once more.
“Zhang Wenyuan, I asked you to come here from Baocheng City to choose a bridal home for our wedding, not to discuss police cases!” Li Yun’s expression darkened. She was clearly displeased that Zhang Wenyuan and Zhang Wei had continued talking about the robbery.
Seeing that Li Yun was angry, Zhang Wei naturally stopped bringing up the case and began introducing the properties he had prepared for them. He had arranged three units for viewing that day, all two-bedroom duplexes in Building Ten. He had already inspected each of them and had a general understanding of their basic conditions.
In fact, the layouts of the three properties were nearly identical. The only real difference was their orientation: two faced east, while one faced southeast. Zhang Wei planned to show them one of the east-facing units first.
The east-facing apartment was on the seventh floor. After Zhang Wei led the two of them up by elevator, Wang Jianfa had already opened the door. The four of them put on shoe covers and entered the duplex.
Because the apartment faced east, it received ample morning sunlight. The entrance opened directly into a large living room, making the entire home appear spacious and bright. Wang Jianfa had also opened the doors and windows in advance so that the air inside would feel fresher.
Immediately to the right of the entrance was a spiral staircase, while an open kitchen stood on the left. Various pieces of furniture occupied the space directly ahead, and the interior had been maintained in fairly good condition. After leading the two of them around the first floor, Zhang Wei took them upstairs.
The second floor was about the same size as the first, except that the living room had been divided into two rooms. There was also a spacious bathroom nearby. The bathroom was circular in design, giving it an especially roomy and comfortable feel.
“Sis Li, what do you think of this apartment?” After showing Li Yun around, Zhang Wei noticed her faintly furrowed brows and asked.
“The apartment itself is all right, but I don’t really like the orientation. And the floor is a little low. It might be noisy at night when we’re trying to sleep.” Li Yun rested her right hand against her chin and thought for a moment before answering.
“That’s fine. If you don’t like this one, I can show you an apartment on the eleventh floor that faces southeast. What do you think?”
“That sounds good. The orientation and the floor are both quite nice.” Li Yun nodded slightly.
The apartment Zhang Wei had just shown them was on the lowest floor of the three properties. Another was on the eleventh floor, and the third was on the eighth. Since Li Yun preferred a higher floor, Zhang Wei naturally took her directly to see the eleventh-floor apartment.
