“Looking for death.”
When Luffy saw the savage wolf demon lunging at him, his gaze turned cold.
He casually flicked a finger, and a tiny blue-white flame pierced straight through the wolf beast’s head.
A core flew out. With a wave of his hand, Luffy drew it into his palm. “A fifth-rank zombie... Barely acceptable.”
He put the core away.
The wolf collapsed with several agonized howls before dying.
Hearing the commotion, the other wolves nearby all turned to look. One after another, they threw themselves at Luffy as though he were a delicious meal.
On the highest mountain in the distance, a silver-white wolf stood with its head thrown back, howling at the sky.
“A Silver Wolf Howling at the Moon?”
Luffy stood and glanced at the silver wolf. The moon was perfectly round. Why were these wolves attacking the little mountain village? Could it be because they were searching for food?
At the thought of food, Luffy’s stomach began to growl.
“Looks like I’m hungry too. Roasting a wolf should be pretty good.”
Just as Luffy was about to act, a monk approached, his entire body glittering with golden light. The savage wolves kept retreating before him.
“Benefactor, why are you lingering in such a perilous place?”
The monk appeared to be around thirty. He wore a Buddhist robe and had a solemn expression, giving the impression of profound spiritual cultivation. The wolves did not dare attack any further.
“You dead monk, you finally came! I nearly waited myself to death!”
A woman dressed in red-and-black leather slowly walked over, a massive sword strapped to her back. She was tall and slender, seemingly in her twenties, with peach-red lipstick and her hair tied into a high ponytail. She swayed as she walked, completely ignoring the wolf demons surrounding them.
“Zhao Wushuang, why did you summon this humble monk to such a dangerous place?”
The monk looked at the smiling woman in confusion.
“My Qingling Taoist Temple is famous throughout this region. But lately, your Songgao Shaolin Temple has been stealing too much of our limelight. So tonight, I’m here to determine who is superior. Whoever loses will acknowledge the other as number two.”
Zhao Wushuang patted her ample chest and spoke with bold, carefree confidence.
“Amitabha. Wushuang, you are being far too childish. How could I compete with a woman?”
The monk replied gently.

“Good grief, there’s actually another living person here?”
Zhao Wushuang noticed the person sitting nearby, roasting wolf meat over a fire with a branch. The meat, of course, came from the wolf that had attacked Luffy and been killed by him.
While the others had been talking, he had already removed the fur and other filthy parts, washed the meat clean, and built a fire nearby to roast it.
The flames crackled.
“Er... Benefactor, how could you kill a living creature? How could you roast wolf meat here? Don’t you know the Wolf King is watching us from over there?”
The monk was utterly dumbfounded. He had never expected that the young man would already have killed a wolf and begun roasting it. What a headache-inducing fellow.
“Why are you talking so much? It’s only a Wolf King. Could it really eat me?”
Luffy continued roasting the meat.
“Wow... That smells wonderful. Young man, what’s your name? Will you give me some later?”
Attracted by the aroma, Zhao Wushuang nearly drooled. She paid no attention to the wolf pack glaring hungrily at them.
“No.”
Luffy rejected her outright.
“Why?”
Zhao Wushuang was speechless. She was a great beauty, and whenever she went out, people normally fought to curry favor with her. Yet this young man had refused her without hesitation.
“Why should I give you any? You haven’t done anything to earn it.”
Luffy raised his eyes and glanced at Zhao Wushuang. His eyes were bright and captivating.
“Amitabha. The two of you have already angered the Wolf King. It is going to attack and devour you both. How can you still have the leisure to bicker?”
The monk was thoroughly exasperated.
“Daokong, you’re far too timid. A mere quasi-Wolf King has frightened you this badly? This lady has killed a one-star quasi-king before. What is there to fear? I could destroy it in an instant.”
Zhao Wushuang rolled her eyes at the monk.
“Amitabha. You do not understand the situation, female benefactor. I know this region best. Although that Wolf King is only a one-star quasi-king, there are two-star, three-star, four-star, and even five-star quasi-kings behind it. That is what concerns me.”
Daokong spoke helplessly.
“So what if they all come? I still won’t be afraid. I can wipe them all out by myself.”
Zhao Wushuang declared confidently.
“My lady, we should leave. This wolf meat cannot be eaten. And you, young man, run while you still can. You’ll die if you stay!”
Daokong was frantic with worry.
“Heh... It’s almost done. We’ll leave after we eat.”
Luffy remained completely calm. The army of wolf beasts had stopped attacking the little village and was instead moving to surround Luffy, Daokong, and Zhao Wushuang.
“Damn, they really came.”
Daokong was speechless. These two were unbelievably fearless. If not for his sense of loyalty, he would have fled long ago.
“Mmm, this is delicious.”
Luffy sprinkled on a little seasoning, tore off a piece of meat, and began to eat. It practically melted in his mouth, tender and fragrant. It was truly delicious, and Luffy wore an expression of pure enjoyment.

“Er...”
Zhao Wushuang swallowed involuntarily. Was it really that delicious? It certainly smelled wonderful.
“Give me some meat. I’m a little hungry.”
She spoke pitifully.
“No. Why should I give you any? You’re not related to me.”
Luffy continued eating as he spoke.
“Tch... Will this do?”
Zhao Wushuang took a sixth-rank core from her body and held it out to Luffy.
“This is pretty good.”
Luffy accepted it, glanced at it, and put it away.
“Help yourself. Don’t be shy.”
“Er...”
Zhao Wushuang had never imagined that this fellow was obsessed with cores. The moment he saw one, his attitude changed completely.
“Amitabha... The two of you have thrown yourselves into danger just for the sake of food. I’m beginning to panic. You two gluttons have dragged me into a terrifying abyss! Zhao Wushuang, you jinx, look! A two-star quasi-Wolf King has appeared on the eastern mountaintop, and a three-star quasi-Wolf King has appeared in the west. I want to cry!”
Daokong edged closer to them.
“Should I eat a little meat before I die? Surely Buddha won’t blame me, right?”
“He won’t. Eat as much as you like. I even brought wine. When there is wine today, drink it today.”
Zhao Wushuang pulled a large ancient-style wine flask from her waist.
“Er...”
Luffy was speechless. Daokong tore off a piece of meat and began devouring it, gulping it down as though he had not eaten in a month.
He was truly fierce.
“Amitabha. Meat passes through the mouth, while Buddha remains in the heart. I never expected that I would be able to eat meat and drink wine with the two of you. Once we finish, let us fight together, regardless of life or death.”
Daokong ate great mouthfuls of meat and drank deeply. Then he handed the flask to Luffy for a few swallows before passing it to Zhao Wushuang.
Luffy had never expected to encounter two people like this in such a place: a tomboyish woman and a monk. And now they were surrounded by a pack of wolves. The situation was truly extraordinary.
