Chapter Ninety-Four: Shen Donghua Meets with Trouble, Chaos Is About to Engulf Linhai
Qin Muxue looked at Qin Guofu’s anxious expression and felt a sting in her heart as well. Although there had been some unpleasantness between them before, the kindhearted girl could not bear to see Qin Guofu in such distress and refuse to help him.
Softly, she said, “Uncle, please don’t be so worried. I’ll try, I’ll see what I can do.”
“Muxue, right now only you can help the family and the company. If I ever wronged you before, I ask your forgiveness,” Qin Guofu said with regret.
“It's all in the past, Uncle,” Qin Muxue replied quickly. “Don’t mind it.”
“Muxue, I’m begging you this time. Ask President Shen Donghua to show us some favor. Say a few good words for him. Thank you, thank you.”
Qin Guofu bowed to Qin Muxue three times.
Seeing him do so, she could not bear it. “Uncle, there is no need for you to bow to me. Please, please don’t.”
Chen Yang, watching Qin Guofu bow, found it absurd as well. It seemed Qin Guofu was so desperate he had even given up all pride.
Not so long ago, Chen Yang had never seen him acknowledge her at all.
Chen Yang knew as well as anyone that even if Qin Muxue went to see Shen Donghua, it might still be useless, and he did not want her running around needlessly.
He said quietly to her, “Muxue, are you sure this will help?”
She met his gaze. “I’ll try, and that’s all I can do.”
“Trying won’t change anything,” Chen Yang answered with cold certainty, looking at Qin Guofu through her.
He said it as much for Qin Guofu’s sake as for hers.
Qin Guofu frowned at the corners of his eyes when he heard that, but by then Qin Muxue had already made up her mind and said, “Chen Yang, you don’t need to say anything.”
“Alright, alright,” Chen Yang nodded repeatedly. He had seen how determined she was to plead with Shen Donghua.
If she wanted to go, let her. He had no energy left for more arguments.
Afterward, Qin Guofu was made to sit on the sofa by Qin Guoshan, and the two brothers spoke from heart to heart.
Since Chen Yang disliked listening to such private talk, he went upstairs.
As for Qin Muxue, she went straight to Hua Ding Company to plead with Shen Donghua.
Chen Yang sat alone in the bedroom in uneasy calm. Everything was still within his control, and he knew no one could alter the outcome.
Sure enough, a little over an hour later, Qin Muxue returned with a grave expression.
As soon as she entered the villa, she faced Qin Guofu apologetically. “Uncle, I’m sorry.”
The moment he heard it, Qin Guofu’s face darkened. He was not stupid; from her face and words he understood she had failed.
“Did you not succeed?” he forced himself to ask.
Muxue answered with remorse. “I’m sorry, Uncle. I said everything I could. President Shen would not budge. In the end, he told me never to come to him again.”
“Did you truly say everything?” Qin Guoshan asked, almost agitated. “Muxue, did you?”
She sighed. “Yes, father. I spoke every word I had to.”
Qin Guoshan let out a helpless breath. He knew his daughter would never lie; if she said she had done all she could, then the effort had failed.
He looked at Qin Guofu and said, “Brother, think of another way. Think of another way somehow.”
Qin Guofu stared at the floor. “What else is there? What else could we possibly do?”
He stood slowly from the sofa and said in a defeated tone, “Then it ends here. It ends here…”
He walked out of the villa, utterly dazed.
Qin Guoshan, unable to bear the sight, hurried after him. “Brother, I’ll walk you out.”
Qin Guofu paused, shook his head, and said, “No need. I’m fine.”
He kept walking, and before long he was out of the gate.
The moment he left, Qin Guoshan folded his arms and looked at Qin Muxue sadly. “Muxue, is there truly no way at all?”
She frowned and nodded. Her expression was heavy; her mood was no better.
Just then, Chen Yang came down from upstairs. In the living room he saw the solemn faces of both Qin Muxue and Qin Guoshan and immediately knew what had happened.
“What is it, Muxue? It didn’t work, did it?” he asked.
She nodded.
Then, as if something had just occurred to her, she looked at him suddenly and said, “Chen Yang, why don’t you speak to President Shen yourself?”
He raised his hand in refusal at once. “Muxue, your father and you both know this as well: the reason Qin Group is in this mess now must have a cause.”
“Besides, Uncle, and the other managers of the family enterprises, likely bear even more responsibility.”
“Why else would President Shen target only Qin Group and leave other companies untouched?”
“And as the saying goes, there is cause for every effect. We should first see whether Uncle himself did something that hurt President Shen deeply. If so, is it really unreasonable that he would move against Qin Group?”
Qin Guoshan heard him out and nodded slowly. He seemed to accept the logic.
His brother had indeed once done something to wound Shen Donghua’s feelings. If Shen was now striking at Qin Group, it was not purely his whim; Brother Qin must have played his part too.
“Since we cannot force this, let it run its course,” Chen Yang continued.
“Muxue, and Father, I agree.”
Qin Guoshan nodded as well.
Chen Yang went on, “Enough. None of you should brood over this. Thinking too much will not help.”
Qin Guoshan and Qin Muxue both nodded again.
Then Han Qin went into the kitchen to cook. Chen Yang sat on the sofa and spoke quietly with Qin Muxue and Qin Guoshan.
In the blink of an eye, two days passed.
The bank loan payment day arrived, and Qin Family had no way to come up with the amount.
They could only liquidate the family enterprises and file for bankruptcy.
News that Qin Group had filed for bankruptcy spread through the entire Linhai business circle almost at once.
Cui Shangkai and the others in the Southwest Chamber of Commerce heard it too, and debated it fiercely.
In the end they arrived at one conclusion: Shen Donghua was truly ruthless.
To take revenge, he had wiped out the entire Qin Group.
Merciless—utterly merciless.
On the third day, just as Chen Yang had only recently arrived at Hua Ding Company for work, his phone rang with a call from Shen Donghua’s secretary.
“Director Chen, this is bad news—Mr. Shen has been attacked.”
Chen Yang felt his chest give a sharp jolt, but he steadied himself and replied evenly, “Don’t panic. Tell me slowly—what happened?”
“He was beaten by a group of unknown people this morning at home. Both he and his wife were seriously injured. He is now in the hospital receiving emergency treatment,” the secretary said in a rush.
“Emergency treatment? Is it serious?” Chen Yang finally lost his composure. “Is he badly hurt?”
“Yes. The doctors said his spleen is damaged and he needs a repair surgery,” the secretary replied.
Chen Yang could no longer hold back his anger. He stood up from his chair. “Fine. I’m on my way to the hospital. Stay with him for now, and make sure nothing happens again.”
“Understood, Director Chen, I know,” the secretary answered.
Chen Yang hung up quickly and rushed to the hospital.
Half an hour later he reached the City First People’s Hospital. At the operating-room entrance he saw Zhang Lin, Shen Donghua’s secretary, and hurried up to him.
“How long has the surgery been going on?” Chen Yang asked.
“It just started,” Zhang Lin said hurriedly.
“How did you find out about the attack so quickly?” Chen Yang asked.
Zhang Lin pulled out his phone and showed him a distress text from Shen Donghua. “Director Chen, look. This is the emergency message Mr. Shen sent me this morning.”
Chen Yang read it, then asked, “Tell me exactly what the scene was like when you got to his house.”
Zhang Lin’s face grew grave. “The floor and the sofa were covered in blood. Mr. Shen was lying on the floor. Mrs. Shen was on the sofa; she had a knife wound in her stomach. Mr. Shen had likely been beaten and had collapsed unconscious.”
“I called emergency services right away, then the police. The police came and took photographs, then the ambulance arrived and took both of them to the hospital. After that I called you. That’s all.”
Chen Yang nodded faintly. Then a chill rose in him, and he murmured to himself, “Who on earth did this?”
