Chapter 99: You Cannot Shake Me Off. Not Unless I Die.
Since Gong Lu had already called her “Mom,” the voice of that somewhat older woman was naturally his mother’s—Yuan Rulan’s.
And yet, hearing Yuan Rulan personally tell Gong Lu to get engaged to An Qianqian only made Ye Luo feel all the more that Yuan Rulan’s attitude toward Gong Lu was off, nothing like that of a real mother.
At the words coming through the phone, Gong Lu gave a soft laugh, but there was no warmth in it at all; his eyes were glacial.
Then, in a lazy tone, he asked, “Mom, did I ever agree to get engaged to her?”
After saying that, he even glanced at Ye Luo.
Ye Luo pretended not to see.
Yuan Rulan did not answer, only asked, “Are you disobeying me?”
Gong Lu merely said, “This won’t do.”
“Why not?” Yuan Rulan’s tone remained calm.
“I already have someone I like.” After saying that, he looked at Ye Luo again.
Ye Luo pretended not to see that as well.
There was a silence on Yuan Rulan’s end for about five seconds before she asked, “Who? Who is the person you like?”
“Ye Luo,” Gong Lu said.
This time, Ye Luo pretended not to hear it.
Yuan Rulan said, “Did you say the name wrong? Is it He Luo? I remember there’s a He Luo in your villa, but I’ve never heard of you knowing any Ye Luo.”
Gong Lu replied, “No mistake. It is Ye Luo.”
Then he hung up.
And once again, he glanced at Ye Luo.
Still smiling.
Ye Luo continued to pretend she saw nothing.
Gong Lu laughed softly as he drove on, his eyes fixed ahead on the road. After a while, he looked at her once more before saying in a low voice, “Since you’ve come, the one I get engaged and married to can of course only be you.”
With a blank expression, Ye Luo said only, “Feel free to go find someone else.”
Gong Lu laughed again, even more softly. “You can’t get rid of me.” In the next second, his expression hardened, and a deep chill rolled off him. “Unless I die.”
Ye Luo gave him a cold look. “You will die.” She paused. “Five years from now.”
Gong Lu froze at once.
During this period, every confrontation between her and this man had ended with him gaining the upper hand. At last, she had the upper hand too, finally winning one back. And just like that, Ye Luo smiled.
Like spring warmth breaking through, like glaciers melting.
“Looks like you know me quite well, but you still don’t know yourself at all,” she said with a smile.
Gong Lu also smiled, looking at the smile on her face. He did not ask how he would die five years later, only said, “Then for these five years, I’ll cherish every second I spend with you even more.”
Ye Luo’s expression turned cold again.
She looked at him as though he were already dead and asked icily, “Whose body did your consciousness enter?”
She was already certain that he must have been to the world three hundred years later. If so, then he must have been like her—his consciousness leaving his original body and entering another person’s body three hundred years in the future.
But there was no one around her who was as impossible to fathom as he was, and no one at her side who knew her inside and out. So whose body had he entered, to know her so well?
As before, Gong Lu only smiled and said nothing.
Neither admitting nor denying it, and giving no answer.
Ye Luo had already expected this reaction, so she was not surprised. She also did not ask again.
She only thought that if he had truly, like her, once had his consciousness leave his original body and enter another’s, did that mean she might also be able, like him, to return to her own body?
And if so, how had he returned to his own body?
Since Gong Lu gave no answers, even if Ye Luo thought about all this, there was still no definite answer.
So she did not dwell on it for long and said no more. When Gong Lu finally parked the car in the villa courtyard, she immediately got out, went inside, and went upstairs.
